Apple iPhone warning proves true
Users may not be able to add Apple features to an unlocked phone |
An Apple software update is disabling iPhones that have been unlocked by owners who wanted to choose which mobile network to use.
Earlier this week Apple said a planned update would leave the device "permanently inoperable".
Thousands of iPhone owners hacked their expensive gadget in order to unlock it for use with other mobile carriers and to run a host of unsupported programs.
There are also reports of the update causing issues with unaltered iPhones.
On Monday Apple issued a statement in which it said many of the unauthorised iPhone unlocking programs caused "irreparable damage" to the device's software.
The company said this would "likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed".
That warning has now proved correct as many owners are reporting their phones no longer work following installation of the update.
Apple requires iPhone owners to take out a lengthy contract with AT&T in the United States but there are a number of programs on the net that unlock the device for use with other networks.
Some owners are reporting on technology blogs and Apple's own forums that the update is deleting contacts information, as well as photos and music, on iPhones that have not been modified in any way.

Get Google Chrome Like Start Page in Firefox
This screenshot illustrates the default start page of Chrome that is displayed when you open a new tab inside the Google browser. It includes a list of most frequently visited websites as well as a list of recently closed tabs - very handy when you reopen an accidentally closed website tab.
The start page of Firefox 3.0 is currently blank but Mozilla is working to add some Chrome like flavor to the upcoming Firefox 3.1 release. For this reason, they have just released a new about:tab add-on (xpi) that brings Chrome like features the the Firefox start page.
About:Tab shows a list of "frequently visited sites" and the "most recently closed tab" but you don’t see image thumbnails in the default view - you can however click the "star" icon and see Website screenshots on the start page just like Chrome or Opera.
Unlike Google Chrome where the list of frequently visited websites is read-only, About:Tab for Firefox lets you re-order as well as remove websites from the list.
One of very interesting features in about:tab is that it can read content from the clipboard and if the text pattern matches a website URL or a physical address, you’ll find direct links on the start page for opening that website without having to paste the URL in the address bar.
If the pattern doesn’t match anything, you get a search link. For some reason, I couldn’t get this to work but it could be a problem with my setup or a bug in the add-on.
The about:tab extension currently works only with Firefox 3.1 and the functionality could become part of the default release. You can check for some more start-page designs as suggested by the Mozilla community.

An external hard disk is a hard disk drive (a lot like the one in your computer) that is placed externally, exterior of the case. You can purchase them pre-made, or purchase a hard disk and an enclosure, and make your own. They came out several sizes, are comparatively cheap, and are well befitted to do several purposes. In this post, I will explain 3 particular purposes for your external hard disk.
For one reason or some other, you might have decided a computer whose storage capability you have overgrown. It perhaps full to capacity with files and software’s, and you require room to expand. So the first good example is to utilize your external hard disk to add expandability to your computer. This is true in case every of your personal computer hard disk bays are full, and particularly if you have a notebook which has only one hard disk bay.
Besides that, you can use your external hard disk as a shared storage drive. You can attach it to a personal computer, set permissions and share-ability, and begin saving, and sharing several files. For instance, you can share and save pictures, MP3s, and video files. By practicing it in this way, you will be able to saves tons of space on your computer’s local hard disk, and you will be able to share files with everybody in your home network.
Additional potential practice for your external hard disk is to save significant documents. For instance, you can scan leaves, works, insurance data, rentals, bank account and credit data, and store it on your external hard disk. You can also take videos of every your valuables, and keep this safety in your external hard disk for later reference. If they are important to you, then they are worthy of being saved in your external hard disk. You can then store this hard disk in a safe placement such as a fire-proof safe, or a safe-deposit box. This will for certain save you tons of headaches in case of theft, or worse yet, a disaster.
There you have it. That’s 3 potential purposes for your external hard disk. They are various, and come in sizes that you will be able to select according to your particular needs. If you’ve many files to save, and then you may get a 1TB hard disk, or greater if you like. Whenever you just have a fewer important documents to save, then maybe a 40 GB hard disk will do. The great thing is that it is you who can select the size you require. It is you who can select what its main purpose will be. And if you require to, you can get more than one external hard disk. That’s what makes it so perfect.
